These Large Black Aluminum dragon scales are anodized aluminum with a deep, uniform matte black finish across each 22.2 × 35.8 mm scale face. The matte surface absorbs light rather than reflecting it, creating an intensely dark, almost void-like appearance — the pronounced center ridge carves deep shadows into the panel, making each scale dramatically dimensional despite the non-reflective finish. At 0.8 mm thick, the scales are rigid and structural, producing the satisfying weight and clink of real metal armor. Matte black is the most versatile dark color in the aluminum range: it works for dark fantasy, stealth, villain, gothic, and modern tactical builds. In a finished panel, black aluminum creates a dramatic, commanding presence that reads as genuinely armored rather than costumed. Lightweight, rust-resistant, and hypoallergenic. Compatible with 15 AWG / 16 SWG jump rings (approximately 10 mm diameter).

The Center Ridge Advantage

Unlike flat or smooth-curved scales, our aluminum scales feature a pronounced center ridge that runs the length of each scale. Even in matte black — where color variation is minimal — the ridge creates deep shadow lines on both flanks that give finished panels extraordinary dimensional depth. The structural rigidity of the ridge also helps finished panels hold their shape during active wear.

What Can You Make with Large Aluminum Dragon Scales?

Scalemail & Chainmaille Armor

Connect scales with open jump rings to build scalemail armor panels, shoulder pieces, chest plates, back pieces, skirts, collars, gauntlets, and accessories. Matte black aluminum creates dark knight, shadow warrior, stealth operative, dark fantasy villain, gothic guardian, and modern tactical aesthetics. Pairs with black rings for a total black-out effect, or silver rings for subtle contrast against the dark scales.

Cosplay, LARP & Theater

Matte black aluminum is the most dramatic and stage-ready of the anodized colors — the non-reflective surface reads as genuinely armored under stage lighting, where glossy surfaces can catch unwanted glare. Hypoallergenic and rust-resistant for full-day LARP and event wear.

Jewelry & Wearable Art

Large matte black aluminum scales create bold, edgy statement jewelry — chokers, bib necklaces, cuffs, and body armor accessories with a dark, architectural quality.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do aluminum scales differ from plastic scales?

Aluminum scales are 0.8 mm thick real metal — heavier, more rigid, and structurally stronger than 0.25 mm plastic. They produce authentic metal sound and feel and create stronger shadow lines due to the center ridge. Plastic scales are lighter and available in more colors; aluminum scales are for builders who want genuine metal armor weight and appearance.

What size are these scales and how many do I need?

These scales measure 22.2 × 35.8 mm. For a shoulder piece, most builders use approximately 300–500 scales. A full-body suit typically requires 2,000–4,000+ scales.

Are aluminum scales safe to wear against skin?

Yes. Anodized aluminum is hypoallergenic, rust-resistant, and the finish will not flake or peel with normal wear.

What jump rings do I use?

We recommend 15 AWG / 16 SWG rings with approximately 10 mm inner diameter.

Do you offer wholesale quantities?
